A last-gasp Claudio Antunes goal gave Nadur Youngsters a 1-0 win over Sannat Lions in the final of the 38th GFA Cup last weekend.

The match was evenly balanced and victory could have gone either way as the two sides were vying to end the season on a high by claiming this second most prestigious honour on the sister island.

Victory for the Lions would have meant a league and cup double but Nadur sounded their intentions right from the opening minutes when two attempts by Milos Stojanovic and Antunes went crashing against the Sannat woodwork.

The Nadur goalkeeper were also unlucky on 18 minutes when a Chris Camilleri effort was deflected onto the post by keeper Steve Sultana.

Sultana distinguished himself with a series of fine saves that denied Sannat from opening the score and at the other end Adrian Parnis was also in fine form to keep his net intact.

However, as the match seemed heading towards extra-time, Antunes won a ball at the edge of the box and fired a rasping grounder that whizzed into the lower corner of the goal for a dra-matic winner.

The Youngsters went on to lift the cup after an absence of six years.

Kerċem beat Xaghra

In another match at the Gozo Stadium on Sunday, Kerċem Ajax won the Division Two Super Cup after a penalty shoot-out against Xagħra.

This contest was another tight affair where no team managed a winner even after extra-time.

Xagħra United, the category champions, had a late Daniel Bartolo ‘goal’ disallowed for offside and Kerċem opened the score four minutes from the end of extra-time through Sabri Rais following a corner.

All seemed lost for Xagħra but they drew level just before the final whistle when Bartolo hit home after a quick break.

Kerċem then scored three penalties, through Leonard Camilleri, Alvin Grech and Jean Paul Mizzi, while Xagħra only managed one through Simon Sultana as keeper Victor Agius stopped three spot-kicks.

At the end of the two matches on Sunday, GFA president Alvin Grech presented trophies and medals to the winning teams.
