Ħamrun Spartans head into the second leg of the best-of-three final series against Valletta today (kick-off 20.00) in high spirits following a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over the Citizens a fortnight ago.

The Spartans will take to the court at the Corradino Pavilion eager to record a second win and clinch the title for the first time since the FMA took charge of the local futsal competitions.

The Citizens are under pressure knowing there will be no other chance if they fail to beat Ħamrun today.

Club chief Dassier Borg believes his team is ready for the challenge.

“In reality, we’re under no pressure,” he said. “One of our pre-season targets was to reach the finals and we have done it. We know that Ħamrun will be keen to win the second leg so the pressure is on them.”

Borg admitted that the suspension of Valletta captain Xavier Saliba is a blow for his team.

“Xavier Saliba was playing at his peak in the play-offs… he was one of the best players in these decisive matches,” Borg said.

“Our captain will be missed even though we have other experienced players to rely on, such as Dylan Musu and Melvin Borg. They have also shown their best in these play-off matches.”

Ħamrun team manager Edward Psaila is predicting another hard-fought clash.

He’s also aware of Valletta’s strength.

“The opening leg of the series could have gone either way,” he reckoned.

“Both teams are equipped with quality players in their ranks. I anticipate another balanced encounter, a match that could be decided by a single goal.”

If today’s match ends in a draw, penalties will be required to determine a winner. A Ħamrun victory would hand them the title.

If Valletta restore parity in the series, a third and decisive match will be played next Thursday.
