The German Ambassador (March 14) chose to speak up on hunting, declaring that it was no longer necessary and, therefore, was objectionable to him.

Speaking of purposes, we would like to ask the Ambassador about his purpose in Malta.

One would expect that his main role here would be to represent his country and to promote the relationship between Germany and Malta.

If hunting were only practised in Malta we would tolerate his criticism. However, since hunting is equally popular in Germany and also once illegalities are not just a Maltese shame, what is he trying to achieve?

Considering that the trapping, poisoning and shooting of protected species – above all birds of prey – is still widespread in parts of Germany and, unique for Europe, there is no functioning control organ, he has not publicly criticised German hunting in the Maltese press to discourage tourism to Germany.

Clearly failing to acknowledge that the German extremists he supports are benefiting from their exposure of Maltese illegalities, he chooses to add to the insult. As ambassador, he obviously cherishes the e-mails he receives from German people who say “they wanted to come to Malta but they find this behaviour (illegal hunting) so disgusting they won’t come” and deems them proof of the effectiveness of his personal mission.

Being the German Ambassador, whatever he states, whether in his official or personal capacity, should be the portrayal of fact. If, indeed, Germans do not want to visit Malta, the least one expects from the German Government representative is to put matters in their right perspective.

Clearly, he chooses not to and persists with his personal attack on Maltese hunters.

We have no qualms in stating that we find his bias and criticism repulsive and look forward to the end of his tenure and to having a German Ambassador that promotes the reciprocal respect of our countries and the legal practices of their citizens.
