I am in total agreement with Francesca Saliba regarding her letter Rising Temperatures (May 1).

Thousands of people have signed a petition for shelters, water points and drain facilities to protect the karrozzin horses. The Animal Rights Coalition had presented the petitions together with a report from equine specialists who visited Malta after they were informed on Malta’s shame of not providing the basic requirements for these working animals. The petitions and report were presented to the Prime Minister in May last year and Minister George Pullicino had publicly stated that these would be erected well before the hot weather sets. But alas there are no signs of shelters!

These inhumane working conditions are unacceptable from the animal welfare point of view, yet the implementation of these animals’ needs is still being postponed by the authorities .

Can all of us who have a conscience be told just who and why these shelters, water points and drains are not in effect yet even though the authorities advertise this “trade” as a tourist attraction?
