I was glad to read Geoffrey Charles Chapman’s letter titled ‘Lack of manners’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, September 20) about young people who occupy seats supposedly reserved for the elderly.

I use public transport to travel to Valletta from Mosta very often, and as an elderly person this is something I always come across.

Very politely I show them the wording on the side of the bus and they immediately give up their seat. Only once did a woman show her displeasure when I told her young teenager son that his seat was reserved for the elderly.

When we were young we were taught that if an older person or a priest boards the bus we should give up our seat, and that is what we used to do.

It is one of the things we should be teaching our children, or do we concentrate on their rights but not their duties?
