A Labour government would honour the ongoing commitments made with Smart City Malta and provide new impetus to the project’s progress, party leader Joseph Muscat said.
He urged Tecom Investments, the promoter of Smart City Malta and main shareholder in Go, to continue working to attract investment to Malta, irrespective of the Maltese electoral calendar, and assured the company that such investments would have the support of the PL.
Dr Muscat was speaking during a meeting with Tecom representatives in Dubai where he was accompanied by a delegation that includes Labour MEP Joseph Cuschieri and PL main spokesman Michael Farrugia.
Tecom reiterated its commitment to Malta and the investments it has made in the country.
The company reaffirmed it would continue meeting the requirements stipulated in its contract with the government regarding Smart City, in line with the current international context.
It however stressed the need for a long-term approach towards the project and appealed for continuous synergy in promoting Smart City Malta.
Last week The Sunday Times reported Smart City Malta CEO Fareed Abdulrahman saying that instability with the single currency was undermining Smart City Malta with certain potential clients.
He said Smart City had been impacted negatively by the war in Libya and now by the euro crisis, right after things seemed to be looking up following the 2008 financial crash.
However, he is confident about the future, as his team is in advanced talks with some large companies whose move to Malta might be announced shortly.
