The Labour Party is committed to eradicating poverty in Malta if elected to power, leader Joseph Muscat said yesterday.

Dr Muscat said that since 2008, those at risk of poverty had increased to 88,000, a surge of some 10,000 people.

Speaking during a visit to the Millennium Chapel in Paceville, Dr Muscat said his government would be committed to eliminating poverty with specific measures aimed at giving families more spending power.

Dr Muscat thanked all the volunteers who work at the chapel, including Fr Hilary Tagliaferro, a name synonymous with assisting those in need.

Fr Hilary explained that the Millennium Chapel is currently helping around 250 families.

Its services include the distribution of free food, counselling and courses in parental skills.
