The way things are shaping up, it is looking almost certain that Joseph Muscat and his Labour Party are heading for yet another triumph at the European Parliament elections.

The Bill on Civil Unions delivered a crucial blow to the leader of the Opposition and the PN. On the other hand, it gave a boost to Muscat and his followers at a time when decisions have to be made regarding the EP elections.

After the sweeping electoral mandate Muscat received, he is looking more solid, firm and defiant day by day. The victory has gone to his head. With a weak Opposition, the chances of winning a second term in office are very possible.

The Opposition leader is looking very weak in the face of such tough challenges. Simon Busuttil was unable to stand up and be counted on the Civil Unions Bill, making him look as if he lacks leadership skills. The PN is still split down the middle.

When is the PN going to regain its posture and its position of trust with the people, to show it is suitable to govern again? The PN has a lot of soul-searching to do. But Busuttil has to convince the electorate about the aspirations and future positions the PN aims to take.

He needs a helping hand to reconstruct the party he leads. The PN must look and act united. It must be at the forefront of future debates with the PL. Muscat’s arrogance in neutralising whoever disagrees with his reforms is very worrying indeed. The country needs a strong, united and determined Opposition. Otherwise, Muscat’s ruthlessness and arrogance will remain with us for decades to come.
