I refer to Simon Busuttil’s contribution (September 5).

On August 13, I was misquoted in a report by L-Orizzont, which was later picked up by the Nationalist Party media, as having said that Malta’s agreement with the European Union can be changed. I never said these words.

After the report was published, I sent a denial to L-Orizzont and to the PN media and asked for a correction. My denial was published by L-Orizzont on August 28 but not by the PN media.

As usual, the PN media took the opportunity to twist facts, mislead and distort arguments, in an attempt to hoodwink and misinform their readers and supporters.

The long-aspiring leader, Dr Busuttil, chose to make a whole song and dance based on the inaccurate report rather than on the correct version of what I had said.

Either he is not up to date or else, more probably, the meanness in him managed to take the upper hand.

Let me assure Dr Busuttil that the Labour Party has no issue whatsoever with Malta’s EU membership.

This was amply made clear by what I said during the business breakfast organised by the General Workers’ Union.

Vanni Xuereb, head of the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee, was one of the main speakers during the seminar and he can immediately corroborate these facts.

He explicitly declared that he was in agreement with what I had said.

Since Dr Busuttil has been chosen by GonziPN to win back the lost sheep, he should be more concerned to put into practice the values he preaches, foremost among them political honesty.

He can put his writing to better use by discussing pressing and real problems our country is having to deal with as a consequence of his party’s incompetence, ineffectiveness and lack of ability.
