The Local Councils’ Association is among other bodies about to be evicted from a palazzo in Main Street, Balzan, after its owners won it back through a court case.

The palazzo, which also houses the local council, a government clinic and a Maltapost branch, has been under Government control since before the Second World War and was being managed by the Housing Authority.

A six-month eviction order was served on the tenants in December, association secretary Jimmy Magro said when contacted.

The association has since been discussing alternative locations with the Government but no solution has yet been found. A request to use a building known as the ex-Isolation Hospital in Mtarfa has been turned down.

“We tried finding alternative premises but have not found anything yet. We are still operating from here as discussions continue with the Government to find an alternative place from where we can operate,” he said.

Mr Magro said renting premises from the private sector was not being deemed a sustainable option because the association did not generate enough revenue.

He called on the Government to provide a list of properties to be considered as the LCA offices so that a sustainable solution could be found as soon as possible.

A spokesman for the Government said discussions on the association’s relocation were underway with the aim of finding a solution as soon as possible.

He added that the eviction was not government-imposed but was the result of a court decision in favour of the original owners.
