The editor of newspaper L-Orizzont, Josef Caruana, has been ordered to pay libel damages of €2,500 each to the CEO of Public Broadcasting Services, Anton Attard, and the former head of news of the same station, Natalino Fenech.

The two men filed for libel after an article entitled ‘Reign of Lies’ was published on October 2, 2012 in which it was alleged that they were part of a “gang of five” who were running PBS and lining their pockets. Mr Caruana defended his position and said the article was not aimed at Mr Attard and Dr Fenech but rather the ‘GonziPN’ system, referring to the administration of former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale said that, while Mr Caruana had stated his aim was to attack the administration, the only two individuals cited in the article were Mr Attard and Dr Fenech.

He found the article to be libellous and ordered Mr Caruana to pay the men €2,500 each.
