The 40th edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu festival is being held today and Saturday. For the first time, it is entitled L-Għanja tal-Poplu – Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija.

The popular event, one of the few local music festivals dedicated to songs in Maltese, is this year being held in Valletta.

Eighteen original Maltese songs will be launched today, 12 of which will be chosen by professional judges to proceed to the final show on Saturday. The PBS orchestra directed by Mro Joe Brown and coordinated by Mro Paul Abela will be accompanying the songs.

Sean Buhagiar will present both shows and Josephine Ebejer Grech, the PRO of L-Għanja tal-Poplu committee, will co-present on Saturday.

The Gozotan group The Travellers are the special guests for today’s show, while Kantilena, Ecca Muscat – last year’s edition winner – and John Bundy will be the special guests on Saturday.

All those who appreciate Maltese talent should not miss this festival.

Both today’s semi-final and Saturday’s final will be held at Pjazza Teatru Rjal Valletta and start at 8.45pm.

The festival is being organised by the commitee L-Għanja tal-Poplu, Fondazzjoni Kreattività, Malta Arts Council and PBS.

• Tickets (today €8, Saturday €12, both shows €15) can be bought from www.kreattivita.org or from the ticket booth at St James Cavallier, Valletta. Ticket hotline is 2122 3200.

Today’s show will be transmitted live on TVM2 and Saturday’s show will be transmitted live on TVM.
