Newly-promoted Kerċem Ajax are the sole leaders of the GFA Division One despite being held to a draw by bottom side Victoria Hotspurs who became the first team to score against early leaders this season.

Kerċem may have taken to the match with an air of complacency but the Hotspurs had other ideas. They took the lead on 14 minutes when Ejofor Nkwocha’s grounder had the better of the Kerċem keeper.

The Ajax struggled for the rest of the half but improved after the break, going close through Stoyko Sakaliev and Malcolm Vella.

The Hotspurs tried to hit on the counter and Kerċem keeper Courtney Mercieca had to be alert on one occasion to deny Anyanwu.

Victoria’s Noel Borg cleared off the line a Sakaliev effort as Kerċem’s pressure finally paid off on 82 minutes when Sakaliev netted following a Kyumyurdzhiev free-kick.

Strugglers Sannat Lions stunned champions Xewkija Tigers 1-0 in the other Division One match.

Xewkija saw more of the ball for most of the 90 minutes but Sannat’s defence held tight.

The goal that decided the game in Sannat’s favour came two minutes from half-time when the Tigers failed to clear a corner and Manwel Cordina profited to head home.

Cordina almost doubled the Lions’ lead soon after the restart but his shot was stopped by the post.

Xewkija had attempts by Dene Shields and Rodney Buttigieg saved by Adrian Parnis and five minutes from time Elton Vella’s free-kick crashed against the bar.

Division Two

Oratory Youths made it five wins in a row after beating second-placed Munxar Falcons 2-0 at the Sannat Ground. Frank Attard and Shaun Attard were on target for Oratory.

Għajnsielem were 3-1 winners over Żebbuġ Rovers.

The Blacks stormed into a 3-0 lead in the first half following goals by Charlon Tabone (2) and Justin Buttigieg.

Nicholas Vella netted Żebbuġ’s consolation goal late in the game.
