Kerċem Ajax edged Xewkija Tigers 4-3 to make sure of the runners-up position in the GFA Division One.

Xewkija, who started the day eight points adrift of the Ajax, opened the scoring through Thiago Dos Santos but Kerċem levelled with a Stoyko Sakaliev goal on 18 minutes.

The Tigers regained the lead from a penalty scored by Dene Shields. Kerċem were not demoralised though and hit a second equaliser, again through Sakaliev, on 28 minutes.

Xewkija held the initiative after the break but their efforts were rather erratic. Kerċem, on the other hand, were more effective in their breakaways and opened a two-goal lead through Sabri Rais (62) and Malcolm Vella (68).

Kerċem held control and Xewkija were only able to reduce the deficit in stoppage time with a Rodney Buttigieg goal.

Champions Nadur Youngsters confirmed their superiority in the championship with a 6-2 win over bottom-placed Sannat Lions.

Nadur raced to a four-goal lead by the end of the first half following goals from Charles Hili (18), Claudio Antunes (37), a Precious Monye (39) own goal and Brandon Said (43).

Sannat did well to narrow the deficit courtesy of a Sunday Baala brace (59, 65) but Nadur scored two other goals late on through Antunes who consolidated his lead at the top of the scorers’ list thanks to his hat-trick.

In another match, Xagħra United and SK Victoria Wanderers figured in a 2-2 draw.

With the relegation-haunted Blues fielding a depleted team, it was no surprise that the Wanderers held territorial supremacy.

The Citizens, however, had to wait until the opening minutes of the second half to go ahead with an Eric Nwankwo penalty (49) before Bernard Ocholeche doubled their lead six minutes later.

Nwankwo almost made it 3-0 but his shot came off the woodwork as Xagħra reserved their best for the latter stages of the match.

John Camilleri pulled one back on 66 minutes and he was then floored in the opponents’ box by David Udo Monday. The Victoria defender was sent off and from the penalty, Jason Portelli made it 2-2 to rescue a crucial point for Xagħra in their fight against relegation.

Youths seal title

Oratory Youths sealed their promotion to the top flight with an impressive 14-0 win over Għarb Rangers.

Shaun Attard scored five goals, Frank Attard hit a hat-trick and Alex Sacco was twice on the mark in the Oratory rout.

The other goals came from Francesco Cini, Christian Cardona, Jurgen Attard and Marvin Grech.

Munxar Falcons, meanwhile, made sure of the runners-up spot with a 4-3 win over Għajnsielem.

Munxar opened the scoring from a Joseph Grima penalty but Għajnsielem levelled through Kenny Hili. Another Grima penalty was stopped by keeper Richard Sammut and the Blacks turned the result in their favour before half-time with goals from Charlon Tabone (34) and Kenny Hili (39).

Munxar looked more aggressive after the break and a Daniel Pace (53, 61) brace put them back on level terms.

The match became rather nervous and Għajnsielem were reduced to 10 men after Ryan Grima was sent off.

Munxar clinched the victory with a last-gasp goal from Michael Pace.
