In the only match from the top flight last weekend, Kerċem Ajax recor-ded a 2-0 win over relegation strugglers Xagħra United to all but secure second place in the table.

Runaway leaders Nadur Youngsters will complete their title mission on Sunday if they beat SK Victoria Wanderers.

Kerċem’s win matured with two goals in the space of three minutes midway through the first half.

The match was off to a balanced start but Kerċem opened the scoring with a curling shot by Andrew Mizzi. Three minutes later, Kerċem were awarded a penalty after Malcolm Vella was tripped in the box. Petar Kyumyurdzhiev converted from the spot.

Xagħra tried to produce a reaction. They were dangerous towards the end of the first half through efforts by Hongla and Kostenski. John Camilleri and Jason Portelli also went close to reducing the gap in the second half.

Kerċem might have increased their lead with attempts by Andrew Mizzi and Kyumyurdzhiev.

Xagħra had Mark Buhagiar sent off five minutes from time for a foul on the goalbound Kyumyurdzhiev.

In Division Two, Munxar Falcons made another significant step towards winning promotion after a 5-1 rout of Żebbuġ Rovers.

Munxar went ahead on 12 minutes through Daniel Pace. They doubled their lead on 63 minutes through an own goal by goalkeeper Baskal Saliba and a minute later Keith Borg made it 3-0.

Clayton Hili put Munxar 4-0 up and, two minutes from time, Gorgi Portelli scored Żebbuġ’s consolation goal.

Munxar rounded the scoring seconds from the final whistle with another goal from Pace.
