A debate on a Gozo bridge or tunnel is taking place.

Those who love the island and appreciate its unique beauty and serenity are against any form of permanent connection because they believe it would surely lose its fascination, mystique and landscape.

Some respected columnists like Lino Spiteri, Tony Zammit Cutajar and Ivan Grixti have come out in favour of keeping and preserving the island without any permanent link. If anything, faster and more punctual transport should be introduced. Well, I’m on the side of these gentlemen and prefer to see Gozo as it is, separated by sea from Malta. I believe that this is the only way to keep enjoying the unique qualities that makes the island a ‘gem’.

The Government should make sure that we will not go through another controversial project as we experienced with Renzo Piano’s open air theatre and Parliament building in Valletta.

If, God forbid, that happens, we cannot undo what is built and the damage done to the environment and the Gozo landscape. Concrete blocks will soon mushroom everywhere and, like Malta, the much sought after open spaces and country sites will soon start to be encroached upon and lost forever.
