Members of the Kalanċ Racing Team, winners of this year’s FIA Top Methanol European Cham-pionship, participated in the FIA’s 110th anniversary celebrations, held recently in Doha.

The Maltese team, led by Chris Polidano, were invited to represent drag racing at the prize-giving ceremony and other events spanning a weekend.

Tonio Cini, president of the Malta Motorsport Fede-ration, was also present for the occasion.

Polidano and his Kalanċ Racing Team enjoyed a very successful season, performing consistently in a tough competition to see off the stiff challenge provided by drivers like Manty Bugeja (Malta) and the Habermann brothers from Germany.

In addition to winning rounds, Polidano also managed to set a new European speed record during the round at Sweden’s Tierp Arena in August. Drag racing is all about acceleration and travelling the track distance as fast as possible.

Polidano’s new speed record is a remarkable 448.13 km/h (278.45 mph).

During the last event of the season, the European Finals at UK’s Santa Pod raceway, Polidano also lowered his personal best to 5.285 seconds.

Polidano is the second Maltese driver to win the FIA European Drag Racing Championship after Bugeja captured the title in the same category in 2012.

Newly-crowned Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton was presented with the 2014 drivers’ trophy at the FIA annual awards ceremony in Qatar.

Awards were presented to all the FIA 2014 champions, including Rally of Australia winner Sebastien Ogier who claimed his second straight FIA World Rally Championship with the Volkswagen factory team.
