Staff members from KPMG recently held a clean-up event at the Pembroke Natura 2000 site as part of its corporate social responsibility agenda.

Over 20 members of staff participated, collecting over 170 kilos of waste dumped in this ecological site close to the heritage trail in the vicinity of the Melita sports centre.

Vincent Attard, president of Nature Trust (Malta), which facilitated the event, said that what KPMG staff did was commendable and urged other companies to follow suit. A spokesman from KPMG said the company sought to promote CSR initiatives and encouraged staff to participate in such events to further instil a sense of responsibility and care for the natural environment and the wider community.

The Pembroke Natura 2000 site is rich in flora, boasting endemic species together with a large variety of orchids and wild plants. Pembroke is also rich in wildlife, such as hedgehogs, chameleons and shrews.

Since the project to promote eco-tourism started a few years back with the Malta Tourism Authority, Nature Trust has collected more than 1,800 kilos of waste dumped on this site alone.

KPMG and Nature Trust thanked the MTA, Wasteserv and Greenskips for their contribution to this event. Since this is a Natura 2000 site, the event was covered by a Mepa permit.
