Maltese band KOI (aka Knowledge Over Instinct) isn’t what one might call a high-profile band, in that its only activity up to a few weeks ago was the release of their 2010 debut single Tears In Your Eyes and its accompanying music video, incidentally both rating high on my list of top local releases from last year.

Despite their busy schedules with their respective bands – Errol Sammut with Airport Impressions and Wayne Camilleri with Big Band Brothers and Xirka Rock – KOI have nonetheless been busy working on new material, the first of which to be released is Give It All Away.

A ballad in every sense of the word, the new single marks a shift from the direction hinted at on the band’s debut single. Where Tears In Your Eyes started off as an instrumental and later became a vocal track, Give It All Away suggests the songwriting approach was different this time.

Also different is the fact that the new single, pre-produced at the band’s own Kat Alley Studios and mixed and mastered by Boris Cezek at Doyaya Studios, features Daniel Cauchi (of Big Band Brothers) on drums and Gjorgji Cincievski on double bass.

An accompanying music video for the song was released last night at White Rock, during which KOI also gave a live acoustic performance.
