Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has condemned alleged discriminatory chants aimed at Fiorentina fans inside the Serie A leaders’ stadium at the weekend.

The wife of Juve legend Gaetano Scirea, Mariella, has said she wants her late husband’s name taken down from the south stand of the Juventus stadium, where the abusive language was reportedly heard during Sunday’s game between the sides.

The chants were reported to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

“Mariella’s reaction is a legitimate one,” Agnelli told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We are also against any form of discrimination. Her husband’s name is linked to the most passionate Juve fans and we are proud of this.

“A strong and unified message is needed against all forms of discrimination, even if we also must not give too much resonance to certain marginal events.

“Juventus has always combat certain behaviours and I was recently at the UNESCO in Paris regarding a conference on racism in football.

“I always pay attention to any chants at stadia and I always remain surprised. On Sunday, I nor did my colleagues hear anything, but the episode was referred.

“It’s right to be against these chants but it’s clear that something doesn’t work in the system if we at the stadium didn’t hear it and yet it emerges the next day in the media.”

The FIGC has been clamping down on discriminatory chants this season and several clubs have been punished with partial closures of the stadium.

“I think stadium closures have brought more problems,” Agnelli said.

“Hence, it’s crucial that we see things from a different angle.”
