I have a preposition for the government regarding requisitioned properties. Forget the derequisition law now in effect and enact a new law that is fair to all requisitioned-property owners. Maybe there should be a registry at the Housing Authority or the courts for us to make appeals on these properties without having to engage a lawyer and so forth.

These properties were illegally taken away from us by the government and I think the government should take the responsibly of returning them to their rightful owners without so much red tape getting in the way. The government never asked us if we were willing to rent out these properties, it took them over for political purposes.

As one commentator remarked, referring to a report in The Times, “Mintoff falls victim to his own crime... and wins compensation.” I am waiting for the government and the courts to face facts and act responsibly. Every tenant occupying a requisitioned property should automatically be given three months to vacate the place, in the same way as the courts ordered for the tenants of Mr Mintoff and his family and a few others.

Let us stop playing politics and do the right thing. Maybe the courts can also decide what monetary damages are due to the property owners for rent lost over 34 years. Since he is the director of the Housing Authority, I ask Albert Buttigieg to investigate. Like Mr Mintoff and family, our family’s rights were breached just the same in 1974, 34 years ago. I for one would like to get our property back before I die. Is anybody listening? The government taketh away and the government should give it back.
