July was slightly warmer than average, with the mercury hitting a maximum of 37.5°C, the Met Office said.

The average temperature was 26.6°C – exceeding the norm of 25.9°C by a margin of 0.7°C.

The highest-ever recorded maximum temperature for July was 42.7°C in 1988. The coolest July night was in 1980 with a low of 15.5°C.

There was an average of 11.7 hours of sunshine a day last month.
