Queen Elizabeth’s likeness is flavour of the week, due to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations marking the 60th year of the monarch’s reign.
A more artistic interpretation to this likeness is being shown at the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery, London, with ‘Pixel Queen 2012’, a collection by Maltese architect and artist Jonathan Mizzi.
Mizzi has recreated a series of sculpted busts of Queen Elizabeth in a new medium he defines as ‘3 Dimensional Pointilism’ and are centred around his fascination of the human eye’s ability to blend individual pixels into a fuller range of colour tones.
In the collection, Mizzi explores the themes of optical illusion and perception found in pointillism by marrying computer generated sculpture with state-of-the-art digital manufacturing processes, pioneering a truly ground-breaking technique within figurative sculpture.
The five Pixel Queen sculptures in milk white, alien green and Union Jack blends have stirred a huge interest in this new form of sculpture.
Mizzi, 30, is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and works from his Malta and London studios. He was responsible for the design and production of several award-winning interiors, notably the Snog Frozen Yoghurt Stores in London.
