Journalists from all of the island’s newsrooms expressed solidarity with French colleagues killed in Paris by observing a minute’s silence while holding placards with the words Je suis Charlie (I am Charlie).

The phrase has become the symbol of solidarity and defiance against what many believe was an attack on free speech.

“We are saddened by this unprecedented attack on the media and the values of liberty it represents,” a statement read out on City Gate steps in Valletta said. “We believe in the rule of law, democracy and human rights and we believe that the response to this horrible tragedy is to reaffirm these values that we cherish so much as part of our European heritage.

“As members of the media, we affirm that the much-cherished right of freedom of expression has to live on without fear of consequence.”

Times of Malta Editor-in-Chief Steve Mallia said: “The slain Charlie Hebdo journalists, who were innocent victims of a cowardly atrocity, remind us that we can never take freedom of expression for granted. They remind us too that we must never give in to those who seek to suppress this right and privilege.

“They paid the highest price for exercising this right and serving the public. For that they have our heartfelt sympathy, undying solidarity and humble respect.”

In the evening, about 300 people gathered in St Julian’s near the Love Monument to protest against the massacre.

The gathering, organised by the French community, also sought to reinforce the commitment to free speech. Those present included Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition leader Simon Busuttil, MPs from both sides of the house, Maltese and foreign diplomats and people of all ages.

The mood was sombre, with some participants carrying placards reading Je suis Charlie or holding aloft candles and pens, symbols of freedom.

There was a relatively strong police presence following suggestions on social media by an anti-immigration group that they too might hold a demonstration or hijack this one.
