Former Maltese journalist Lawrence Dimech has been selected as one of the 40 People of Australia Ambassadors.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the chosen ambassadors who have been recognised for their work with the local community.

The ambassadors were chosen following hundreds of nominations from the public. The programme falls under the Australian Multicultural Council, officially launched by Ms Gillard last year.

Born in Ħamrun, Lawrence Dimech has lived in Sydney for the past 58 years. He served as the Maltese government’s representative in New South Wales for 11 years and has served as Migration Attaché, Consul and as the first Consul General in NSW. He is also one of founders of the Maltese Herald, the national Maltese weekly newspaper in Australia.
