The Maltese Premier League is proving an ideal platform for Brazilian players to relaunch their careers as Jorge Santos Silva is poised to follow fellow countrymen Luis Edison ‘Tarabai’ and Jorginho in securing a move overseas.

After Tarabai and Jorginho, formerly of Hibs and Qormi respectively, joined Hungarian club Kecskemeti TE, Jorge is leaving Birkirkara to sign for Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense.

Although Jorge was happy with Birkirkara, the opportunity to play for a prestigious club in his homeland was too good to turn down.

The lucrative offer from Atletico Paranaense came about after the club had Jorge watched following a recommendation from an agent in Spain who has been working closely with Edoardo do Nascimento, the Brazilian player’s representative.

After receiving a formal proposal from Atletico Paranaense last week, Jorge is expected to sign the contract in the coming days.

Like Tarabai, Jorge, 25, first came to Malta two years ago to join Vittoriosa Stars who had just won promotion to the Premier League.

Although Vittoriosa were relegated at the end of the 2010/11 season, Jorge caught the attention of a host of clubs after forging a reputation as a fast, goal-scoring winger.

The Brazilian moved to Sliema last summer but parted ways with the Blues in January. Birkirkara moved swiftly to capture Jorge who is regarded very highly by coach Paul Zammit.

Jorge enjoyed a good start to the season, scoring Birkirkara’s first goal in the 2-2 draw with Metalurg Skopje in the first leg of their Europa League first qualifying round match.

His exit is a setback for Zammit as the Brazilian was a key figure in the Stripes attack. Having signed Joselito to boost his attacking options, Zammit will now turn his attentions to bringing in a replacement for Jorge.

Meanwhile, Carlos Campagnoli, who played for Marsaxlokk last season, is also set to join Kecskemeti.
