The percentage of registered unemployed people rose last month by 4.8 per cent to around 6,869, statistics revealed.

The number in Malta was 6,185 while there were 684 in Gozo, the National Statistics Office said.

Unemployment among men increased by 3.2 per cent to 163, while female unemployment increased by 152 or 10.6 per cent. Unemployment fell among people aged 20 and younger, but increased among people aged 45 and over.

When compared to September 2011, the number of people who were unemployed for more than a year increased by 9.4 per cent to 215 while people registering for work for less than 21 weeks decreased by 1.7 per cent to 50.
