Unemployment has gone down to its lowest level in almost 15 years, the government said yesterday as it welcomed the latest figures to come from EU statistics agency Eurostat.

The 5.6 per cent unemployment rate in June was the lowest since Eurostat started compiling the figures, it observed, adding that this compared to 6.3 per cent in the last month of the previous administration.

Under the present government, the number of people seeking work was down by some 1,000.

Malta registered the third-lowest unemployment rate in the eurozone, whose rate fell to 11.5 per cent in June from 11.6 per cent in May, hitting the lowest level since September 2012.
