Unemployment was slightly up last month, according to the latest NSO statistics.

At the same time, Eurostat confirmed that economic growth slowed down in the second quarter even though Malta still outperformed the other euro area member states.

The NSO reported that those actively looking for a job in July increased by 83 over the preceding month. However, jobless figures were better when compared to a year earlier. The registered unemployed amounted to 6,836, 464 below the figure a year earlier.

On the negative side, the number of those looking for a job for more than a year increased by 190 in July over July 2013 to stand at 3,139.

Eurostat data for the second quarter confirmed that the Maltese economy slowed down between April and June, even though it continued to perform well, particularly when compared with the rest of the EU.

Eurostat said Malta registered a GDP growth rate of 2.7 per cent in the second quarter, compared with 3.8 in the first.

Between April and June, Hungary reported the best economic growth rate (3.7 per cent) followed by Latvia (3.5 per cent).

Within the euro area, Malta posted the best economic performance in the second quarter.
