Just over 6,550 people were unemployed in September, a decrease of 106 over the same month last year, figures issued yesterday by the National Statistics Office revealed.

The statistics show that while unemployment in Malta was down, in Gozo the figure increased by five. As at September, there were 5,874 people unemployed in Malta and 680 in Gozo. In total, there were 5,120 men and 1,434 women registering for work in September. Unemployment declined across all age groups, with the largest decrease being recorded in the 25-29 age bracket.

Compared to September last year, the number of people registering for work for less than 20 weeks increased by 161, or 5.7 per cent, while the number of people registering for more than one year declined by 236, or 9.3 per cent.

The NSO said most unemployed men were seeking occupations related to services, sales and crafts, while women sought clerical and service-oriented jobs.
