A living miniature sailing boat (above) has kept its appointment with Malta, although slightly late.

The dark blue floating colony of jellyfish Velella velella – often mistaken as a single individual – normally appears at the end of January.

Prolonged weak wind this year may have made it slightly late, as this is a surface, wind-propelled species.

The jellyfish were sighted at Golden Bay by Sharklab volunteers. The good news is: they don’t sting humans.
