Last weekend, I had a Jekyll and Hyde experience when I tried to go out for lunch in Sliema with my dog, which weighs less than 3kg. Lunch with my four-legged best friend has always caused problems in Malta.

All I really ask for is to have a nice cold beer and a snack while enjoying the view. However, as usual, waitresses and restaurant managers treated me like I’m carrying the plague.

This happened at the first place I tried to stop for drinks, just to try a different place. At this recently opened establishment, I would have thought that manners and attitude would have been up to scratch. Boy, was I wrong.

First, the waitress told me that I couldn’t stay there, outside, and then asked me to make sure that my dog doesn’t jump on a customer and steal his food. I’ve got to admit, I’ve heard some weird stuff regarding dogs but this lady has my vote for the most original ‘concern’ when it comes to customers with dogs.

Well, that was my Mr Hyde experience. At that point, feeling sorry for these people, I moved about 100 metres down the road, at a restaurant where I really do feel at home.

As soon as I get there, without me saying anything, they brought a bowl of water for my dog and greeted me with a smile. They were helpful, caring and, most of all, professional in their job. They have great manners and constantly ask if everything is OK or if my dog needs more water or something else. That is the way a dining experience should be, with or without a dog.
