Fundación Mapfre recently presented The Fashion Universe of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Street to the Stars – an exhibition at Paseo de Recoletos 23 in Madrid.

Gaultier has been defined as the enfant terrible of fashion, a label owed to his ability of blending haute couture with ready to wear

Produced by the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Montreal in collaboration with the Institute of Culture of Fundación Mapfre and La Maison Jean Paul Gaultier, the exhibition is the first international show devoted to the French designer – an innovative project that casts light on his person, his work and his influence on the world.

Rather than a retrospective, this is a contemporary installation made up of 110 haute couture and ready-to-wear models, over 50 sketches, audiovisual pieces, excerpts from parades, and first designs and photographs which testify the risky and innovative offerings that have marked Gaultier’s career.

The exhibition, which runs until January 6, also features previously unseen works, as well as items of cinematographic costumes resulting from the artist’s close relationship with the world of cinema, fashion and dance in Spain.

Gaultier has been defined as the enfant terrible of fashion, a label owed to his ability to blend haute couture with ready to wear.

The street has been his source of inspiration and also his great objective, for his great wish is to show creations that are “worn, lived and seen”.

The exhibition, on display in Madrid, started out in June 2011 in Montréal, moving on to the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts and the Young Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco. It will also be on display at the Kunsthal Rotterdam in Holland (February-May) and at the Arkitekturmuseet in Stockholm (June-September).
