The number of tourists who visited Malta in January fell by four per cent, to almost 62,200, when compared to the same period last year, official statistics revealed.

However, total night increased by two per cent to more than 511,100, the National Statistics Office said. More than 52,490 trips to Malta were holidays while around 7,000 were for business.

The majority of tourists came from EU with the UK and Italy jointly accounting for a 47 per cent share of total visits.

A notable drop of 21 per cent was registered in the Italian market while other markets remained virtually unchanged.
