To celebrate James Bond’s 50th anniversary and in anticipation of the forthcoming SkyFall in local cinemas, Euro Media Forum is organising an event in conjunction with Eden Cinemas.

To spice up the evening there will also be a James Bond memorabilia exhibition and a quiz

The Science of James Bond takes place today at the Italian CulturalInstitute in St George’s Square, Valletta, at 7pm. Entrance is free.

Are 007’s gadgets science fact or fiction? Bond’s first gadget was the stylish briefcase that featured hidden ammunition, gold coins, an AR7 folding sniper’s rifle with infrared telescopic sight and a teargas cartridge disguised as a tin of talcum powder.

The lethal luggage was only the prelude to the world’s most famous car – the sleek Aston Martin DB5 that shot bullets, had revolving number plates and a rear bullet-proof screen and had Bond (Sean Connery) in awe of its ejector seat, which was handy for disposing of unwelcome passengers at the push of a button.

The science and technology of the legendary gadget master of MI6 (Q, played by the late Desmond Llewellyn) have thrilled movie audiences and kept gadget enthusiasts guessing for five decades as to whether these inventions are truly possible.

The Science of James Bond will take the audience on a fascinating journey through the technology that underlies his most fantastic missions. Bond gadget enthusiast and scientist David Pace and film researcher Justin Camilleri will provide a highly entertaining, informative look at the real-world, science behind Bond’s gadgets, such as the Omega Seamaster laser watch that cuts through steel, the white Lotus Esprit car that turns into a submarine, the ever-popular rocket-firing cigarette and, last but not least, the Aston Martin Vanquish that turns invisible.

The late Q’singenious inventions, which have accompanied Bond through his astonishing battles beneath the earth, sea, skies and outer space, will be analysed, as well as the new Q for the Facebook generation played by Ben Whishaw, who supplies Daniel Craig’s Bond with his first-ever Walther PPK gun with fingerprint recognition in the upcoming SkyFall.

To spice up the evening there will also be a James Bond memorabilia exhibition and a quiz.

The first winner will take away an all-inclusive package of two cinema tickets, a bowling game for two and free parking. The second winner will get two cinema tickets and free parking. The third winner will be given two cinema tickets.
