A man who admitted stealing a handbag from inside a church and relapsing was jailed for 12 months.

Jesmond Aquilina, 42, from Cospicua committed the theft in Vittoriosa on July 16.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri took into consideration the fact that Mr Aquilina had admitted the charges, noting also his criminal past before handing down an effective jail term.

The magistrate recommended that Mr Aquilina be kept at the Forensic Unit at Mount Carmel Hospital while serving time.
