A Slovak man was yesterday jailed for 10-and-half years after pleading guilty to importing 100 capsules of cocaine and heroin.

The man was intercepted at the airport on October 14, 2009, after landing from Brussels with drugs from The Netherlands.

He was carrying 63 capsules of cocaine, containing a total of 621 grams, and 37 capsules containing 369 grams of heroin.

Appearing before Mr Justice Lawrence Quintano, the accused decided to plead guilty rather than face trial by jury.

Besides the jail term he was fined €23,000 which, if not paid within two months, will be converted into an additional five-year term of imprisonment.
