Italy’s new Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, said yesterday his country would give priority to irregular migration and would place the Mediterranean at the heart of decisions when his country took over the rotating EU presidency later this year.

Italy’s youngest ever head of government made the pledge when he met Prime Minister Joseph in Rome. Dr Muscat said that Malta, along with Italy and Greece, had to remain united to keep irregular migration on the EU agenda.

Both leaders also discussed energy policies and ways to strengthen relations between the two countries.
