Italy took their gold medal haul at this year’s Mediterranean Games to 70 after wrapping up their commitments with success in the women’s volleyball final yesterday.
The Italian girls recovered from a set down to overcome hosts Turkey 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21) in the decider.
The bronze medal went to Croatia who edged out neighbours Slovenia 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 15-13).
Egypt also ended their participation in Mersin on a high note after their men’s team won handball gold. They upset Croatia 28-23 in the final.
In the bronze medal match, Turkey had the better of Italy 32-26.
The badminton singles competitions also came to a conclusion yesterday.
France’s Brice Leverdez won the gold medal after beating Spaniard Pablo Abian Vicen 21-17 23-21 in the final.
The women’s title match was an all-Turkish duel. Neslihan Giyit saw off the challenge of Ozge Bayrak 21-16 21-13 to secure another gold medal for the hosts.
Spanish gymnast Carolina Rodriguez claimed top spot in the individual all around event with a winning total of 69.967 points.
Italy topped the medals table with a total of 186 medals, of which 70 were gold. Turkey were second with 47 golds (total 126) while France took third place with 25 gold medals (95 in all).
William Chetcuti’s success in Double Trap lifted Malta into 16th place and above San Marino, Syria, Macedonia, Bosnia and Lebanon in the final medals classification.
Besides Chetcuti’s gold, Malta also won a silver medal thanks to bowls duo David and Stefan Farrugia in the Raffa Doubles.
