This year we are celebrating a number of anniversaries, the most important being Independence Day and Freedom Day. It is therefore perhaps the appropriate time to fine-tune our national anthem.

The words “id-dehen lil-min jaħkimha” (“good judgment to those who rule”) have now become obsolete. We do no longer have rulers but democratic governments, and hence I suggest that we change the words to “lil min imexxiha” (“who governs”).

I sincerely hope that the President, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition could come to an agreement on this proposal.
