Kenneth Zammit Tabona (Diamonds Are Forever, June 12) contemplates what life would have been like had Malta been integrated into Great Britain as Dom Mintoff had suggested in the 1950s. Well, personally, as an atheist, I see it like this, instead of writing against the Church, under such circumstances I would be writing against the royal family, it’s as simple as that.
If I don’t believe in God, then, obviously, I don’t believe in anyone’s blood being of any more importance than that of another. To me, royalty is but another made-up invention, like God. On that note, still in my opinion, regardless of all humankind’s progress as a species, the fact that we still believe in, not just God, but also kings and queens, has kept us somewhat in the dark ages.
However, I really don’t think that the majority of British actually believe the Queen’s blood to be particularly “sacred”; it’s just tradition, that’s all.
