Maltese Swingers brings together the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, swing DJs and musicians in one event. Musical director Sigmund Mifsud tells us more.

Where did the inspiration from the event come from?

This is not the first time that Daniel Cauchi, who will also be taking part, and myself are teaming up to produce a swing concert.

In fact, this is going to be our third project of this genre, but this one is going to be slightly different. It is a fact that swing music is becoming more popular among new generations all over Europe. More bands are experimenting and introducing new concepts and sounds to this style of music and more people are discovering the electric vibe that this style of music transmits.

Swing music generates a feel-good factor even to those who are new to it. So, for both of us it was just a matter of timing to be inspired to produce such a concert, also because I believe we both have a soft spot for swing music.

What kind of music can we expect to hear at the event?

Our swing concert will feature standard numbers that were made famous by swingers such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin; instrumental numbers by Glen Miller and Benny Goodman and some of Michael Buble’s best hits.

This year we will also play some pop music from Queen and U2 , to mention a few musicians that combine the swing style with a touch of electronic sounds. The Maltese element will definitely be present in this concert.

How are you going to fuse live brass music with electronic music being played by DJs?

Electro Swing Malta is a local group of musicians and DJs that managed to give an electric sound to this style of music. They are synonymous with themed parties and whenever they perform the vibe is simply magical.

Their sound is fresh and futuristic and adding 25 more instruments to their productions will definitely offer something unique to all those attending. It is difficult to describe, it needs to be experienced.

What instruments are being played by the orchestra and who are the musicians?

The core of the orchestra is the rhythm section consisting of a bass guitar, rhythm guitar, drum kit and piano. These will be responsible for the main groove or drive of the music played. The brass section consisting of trumpets , trombones and saxaphones will add the punch and depth and the sexy sounds , while the string section will give that touch of class.

Are there any numbers to look out for?

Bohemian Raphsody and Sing Sing Sing are definitely two of the numbers that I will be thoroughly enjoying. These are two of my favourite numbers. Even though it's not the first time we played them , this time it is different.

Maltese Swingers takes place on Friday at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, at 8pm.
