It has now become common to discuss ethical and social issues on these islands. We are mentioning IVF, same-sex marriage, drug legalisation and even abortion. These issues can be discussed with care and responsibility.

What I find a pity, and from what I can observe, is that the Maltese in general feel in a rush to introduce these methods without proper consultation. I am deeply sorry to say that we, as a nation, sometimes feel that we are in some sort of race with other countries on the mentioned issues – the same feeling to ‘copy and paste’ others.

I am even more sorry that we are addressing such issues in a highly emotional manner and lack logic and reasonable thinking.

It’s not the first time that this nation becomes superficial when it comes to discussion while the two-tribes mentality triumphs.

Mind you, social and minority issues are important but not at the expense of more serious and profoundly affecting issues such as the economy, demographic change, poverty, foreign affairs and other issues, which matter most to the majority of families, couples and even single individuals.

It’s not that I do not care for minorities or issues left unattended for decades. It’s just that there is a need of balance and things must not go one way or another.

You just cannot neglect issues for the sake of others that only address a minority.
