Times of Malta photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi is documenting the lives of asylum seekers and migrants crossing the Mediterranean in his project Islelanders.

The project, supported by UN High Commissioner for Refugees, will explore the impact of artistic photography throughout this year.

“Through his photography Darrin is bringing attention to human stories that could otherwise be lost behind statistics and politics,” said Jon Hoisaeter, UNHCR representative to Malta.

The project started this month with the launch of an online photo collection, www.islelanders.com – new images will be added every week – and will culminate in an exhibition at St James Cavalier, Valletta, in December, accompanied by a book containing photos spanning more than a decade of migrant arrivals in Malta.
