I have a great affection for Malta and things Maltese but the verdict in the recent case concerning the death of a Sudanese immigrant after an altercation at a Paceville nightclub in 2009 leaves me feeling just a little ambivalent about justice in Malta.

It seems that from the outset, the victim, Suleiman Abubakar, had been dealt some awful cards. He was an unwanted illegal immigrant; he was from an alien culture; he was black; he had no one to speak up for him; and he could not speak up for himself because he has been dead for three years. This is not exactly a winning hand in any court of law, is it?

Surely, it is the Attorney General’s responsibility to review such cases to ensure that there has not been a miscarriage of justice.
