I write to express my anger and at the same time amazement at the irresponsibility shown by construction workers, the contractor and the architect responsible.

The episode I am referring to took place last week at the lower end of Triq il-Uqija in Ta’ l-Ibraġ, on the construction site of the former Forum Hotel, and more specifically where the new Greens supermarket is being built.

A large lifter crane was hoisting six-metre-long pre-stressed concrete slabs to the top of the building. There was much more than a breeze that day, the road was not closed off to traffic, in fact cars were driving up the road passing underneath the slabs, no wardens were present and the slabs were hovering eerily above the road suspended from metal chains.

All this points to the possibility that no permit was requested for this dangerous and risky exercise, and, by chance, it was a Saturday.

You know what that means: no one in authority can be contacted on such a day to report what is going on. Coming hot on the heels of the San Anton School incident, I think this was sheer irresponsibility and selfishness on the part of the contractor, site manager and the architect in charge. And why? Just to save a few euros, when they are making millions?

Shame on all those responsible for allowing this to happen.

But this is Malta and its mentality of ‘let’s take a chance, then if something happens we will see’.
