When: October 1
Where: San Marino
The Investiture of the Regent Captains, San Marino’s two heads of state, is a rich and elaborate ceremony which has followed the same protocol for centuries.
This tiny nation state, located in a mountainous area near the east coast of Italy, acquired its two-leader tradition from the Roman Republic.
The appointment of the country’s Regent Captains is held twice a year on the first days of April and October.
These two officials are elected by the country’s Grand and Central Council to serve for six months and they are usually chosen from opposing political parties.
Prior to the investiture ceremony, the citizens of San Marino are given a three-day period to file complaints or charges against the previous Captain Regents if they so wish.
A colourful pageant through the streets of San Marino’s historical centre follows.
The nearest airport to San Marino connected to Malta by direct flights (Air Malta and Ryanair) is Bologna.
