The Nationalist Party appreciated the contribution of all elderly people, irrespective of their political beliefs, and would strive to ensure they had the services needed to lead a dignified life, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said.

“If we keep making the right choices, and go for sound finances, then the elderly will keep benefiting from the services they deserve,” he said, cautioning that social benefits were often the first to suffer when a country had financial problems.

He was speaking during the programme Qalb Il-Familja, aired on Net TV.

Dr Gonzi said the PN policy for the elderly was centred around ensuring that, when possible, they could live in the community. The PN was also committed to increasing the number of residential homes, whether owned by the Government or by the private sector.
