Go recently issued an announcement saying that it now offers the best mobile internet speed on the island – 14.4 Mbps – and that this will shortly increase to 21.1Mbps.

In his letter of March 9, Edward Zammit refers to Go’s internet speed –the speed a client would get over his fixed internet at home or office, which is altogether different to mobile internet that refers to the speed he would get, for example, on a smartphone, tablet or laptop using a “dongle” via the mobile network.

The project, started last September with Nokia Siemens Networks, involves extensive replacement of Go’s mobile base stations plus the addition of 3G equipment on a large scale. Hence, our statement that the project would “expand coverage and improve network experience”, as Mr Zammit says.

Of course, this project is only part of a comprehensive upgrade to the mobile system, which started last year with the replacement of the core network equipment and which is also complemented by fibre links from the base stations to the “internet”, which only Go can offer.

With regard to problems with fixed internet speed, these could be due to a number of issues and we would encourage customers to check the very helpful tips available on the Go website and Facebook to make sure they are getting the best out of our service.

We can reassure Mr Zammit that Go is spending millions of euros every year on constant improvements to our infrastructure, not only when it comes to mobile but also for our fixed internet.

We are executing a programme to replace the old copper network with much more resilient fibre, meaning that our customers are getting much higher internet speeds (also enabling them to receive Go interactive TV) while, in the meantime, greatly reducing the network’s vulnerability in bad weather.

We would urge the relative mentioned by Mr Zammit to send us his contact details so that we can do all possible to identify the cause of his problem.
