The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is being marked today.

Participating countries will express their commitment to promote a drug-free society.

Aġenzija Sedqa, the national agency against alcohol and drug abuse, which also marks its 17th anniversary today, has reaffirmed its promise to offer health promotion, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation services to all people with drug, alcohol or compulsive gambling problems, and their families.

The agency aims to increase awareness of the dangers of substance abuse through the delivery of various prevention programmes in primary, secondary and post-secondary schools, programmes at the workplace, parental skill courses and projects within the community, among other activities.

Treatment services include counselling, detoxification, community programmes and residential services.

These are supported by psychological and family therapy services.

It also offers support to the client’s family members and others.

Sedqa encourages people who have a substance abuse problem, and their relatives, to seek help by calling 179 or 2388 5110 during office hours.
